KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 11424
JULY 2006 NEWSLETTER
Our next meeting is on Sunday, July 16th, after 10am Mass.
The August meeting is on August 20th.
PAST EVENTS
GOD’S SUMMER CAMP:
Council Past Grand Knight Dave Patterson, Deputy Grand Knight Don Harrison, Outside Guard Bernie Switter,
brother Knight John Keyes and their wives prepared and served over 60 lunch meals to folks attending the “God’
s Summer Camp” program in Chattanooga on June 16th.
PASSING OF COUNCIL WARDEN JOE QUINN:
Council members, St. Bridget Church parishioners, and the Rhea County community were all shocked at the
untimely death of our friend and fellow Knight, Joe Quinn, on June 17th. Joe was a Knight for 27 years, and
had been an active volunteer in numerous church and community activities. Several Council members attended
his wake, memorial service, and internment at the Veterans National Cemetery in Chattanooga. We extend our
deepest sympathy to Joe’s family.
INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS:
Council 11424 officers for the 2006-07 fraternal year were installed on July 9th after Mass.
Special thanks to our District 13 Deputy Bill Markiewicz and Council Chaplain Father Jim Vick who officiated at
the ceremony.
UPCOMING EVENTS
’06-’07 KICK-OFF MEETING:
The new fiscal year “Kick-Off” meeting for the East Tennessee area will be held on July 15th at St. John
Neumann Church in Farragut. The event will help Council officers get the information and training they need to
ensure that their Councils have a successful new year. Anyone who would like to attend should contact Council
Financial Secretary Frank Szot or Grand Knight Doug Schott.
BASEBALL GAME:
Past Grand Knight Jim Connors has set up a “Knights at the Ballpark” outing for our Council, families, and
friends for July 28th at 7:15pm at Bell South park in Chattanooga. The tickets are cheap ($2), and the event will
feature fireworks as well as fellowship. Please come out and support this fun event. Go Look-Outs!
CORPORATE COMMUNION:
Our Council is scheduled for a “corporate communion” Mass on July 23rd. Council members will sit as a group
in the front left pews, and all of the normal lay person activities (lectors, ushers, extraordinary ministers of the
Eucharist, etc.) will be performed by Knights. All Council 11424 members are encouraged to be part of this
special event which was coordinated by brother Knights Bernie Switter and Tony Gervolino.
MR DRIVE:
Our annual MR drive will be held in the next couple months, the date and time to be determined. Anyone who
would like to lead our Council’s MR activities should contact GK Doug Schott.
GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT
14 brother knights, including our outgoing District 13 Deputy Rusty Phillips, attended the Council 11424 monthly
meeting on June 18th. I want to take this opportunity to thank Rusty for his three years of faithful service as our
District Deputy. District 13 (northern Chattanooga and vicinity) has prospered under his leadership, and we
wish him well as he moves on to be the Tennessee State Ceremonial Director.
A new fraternal year has begun, and I want to thank everyone who has accepted a leadership role, whether
elected or appointed, in the Council. Things just don’t get done unless someone steps up and leads our efforts
to achieve our Council goals. I especially want to thank Ken Hitchcock for accepting the position of Council
Warden previously held by Joe Quinn.
Brother Joe’s death at the early age of 54 was a stunning reminder that we are all here on a temporary basis,
and then we are gone. How will we each be remembered?
Joe is remembered as the ever present greeter at the door of St. Bridget’s Church, always offering a handshake
with a smile as we gathered for Mass. An Army veteran, Joe understood the importance of service. He was
always doing something to help around the church, and he worked countless hours on our MR (“Tootsie Roll”)
fundraising drives.
It was an honor for me to attend Brother Joe’s internment ceremony at the Vet’s cemetery in Chattanooga. Joe
would have been proud to see how professional the Army burial detail handled the gun salute, the playing of
“Taps,” and the presentation of the folded flag to his daughter.
Joe, you will be missed. Vivat Jesus!
Very respectfully,
Doug Schott,
Grand Knight, Council 11424
St Bridget Church, Dayton, TN
