KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 11424
JANUARY 2007 NEWSLETTER
Our next meeting will be held on January 21st after 10am Mass.
The February meeting will be on February 18th.
PAST EVENTS
THIRD DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATION:
Our Brother Knight Phu Le went through his 3rd degree exemplification on December 16th at Council 610 in
Chattanooga. Phu was accompanied for this special occasion by Council Treasurer Jerry Corvin and Grand
Knight Doug Schott. Congratulations Phu!
PARISH CHRISTMAS PARTY:
The St. Bridget parish Christmas party sponsored by our Council was held on December 16th.
A nice crowd enjoyed the delicious potluck dinner goodies and the music provided by our “DJ,” Brother Knight
Jan Rodriguez from Chattanooga. We were also treated to a “surprise” visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus (Dave
and Carolyn Patterson), and an impromptu “Rockettes” dance show by the irrepressible duo of Rene Panzer and
Ginny Bishop. Special thanks to Jerry Corvin who coordinated the party and his many volunteers who made it all
possible.
UPCOMING EVENTS
TN STATE MID-YEAR MEETING:
The TN Knights of Columbus state Mid-Year meeting will be held in Nashville on Saturday, January 13th. Anyone
from Council 11424 who would like to attend is welcome to travel with Council Financial Secretary Frank Szot and
Grand Knight Doug Schott.
SUPER BOWL PARTY:
Our Council will host a parish Super Bowl party on February 4th in the St. Bridget Church family life center. The
game starts at 6pm, so plan on arriving between 5 and 6pm to get in the mood for food, football, and fellowship.
This will be another potluck dinner event, so bring something to share as we cheer on the Titans… oops… make
that the, uh, Colts… or Giants… or… whoever is still standing at the end of the playoffs. Rumor has it that there
may be a football “pool” board or two to enliven the proceedings. Council Treasurer Jerry Corvin has graciously
offered to coordinate the party, so please call him to volunteer your services in setting up or cleaning up afterward.
GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT
14 brother knights attended the Council 11424 combined November/December monthly meeting on November
19th at St. Bridget’s. After prayerful consideration and much discussion, our Council voted to raise annual dues
to $40 beginning in 2007. This is the first time since the Council’s founding 12 years ago that dues have been
raised. The new “early bird” discount will be $35 for those who pay their dues before February 1st, so be sure
and get your money in soon to Council Financial Secretary Frank Szot who has our new 2007 membership cards.
I mentioned previously that our Council now has its own web site as a result of the hard work of our very own
“webmaster,” Brother Knight Bob Patterson. Check it out at: www.kofc11424.org
Bob is very open to suggestions on what goes on the site, so e-mail him or give him a call with any ideas you
may have.
Finally, as we begin another New Year, I’d like to ask everyone to pause and reflect on how blessed we all are to
have Father Jim Vick as our Council Chaplain and pastor. Father Jim has been a great advocate for our Council,
and always supports our efforts to help our parish, families, and youth. Please include Father Jim on your prayer
lists, as he has an incredible challenge trying to integrate what amounts to two parish communities.
Rhea County has an increasing Hispanic population, most of whom are Catholic, and St. Bridget Church offers
them a place to express their faith. The language barrier and other cultural differences make it difficult for our two
parish “communities” to pray, play, and work together, but Father Jim is trying his best to help us understand,
respect, and accept each other as children of God.
This is a tough challenge which will require all of us to be patient as the process unfolds over time. But the
seeds of unity are already starting to sprout > Our very own Brother Knight Juan Zavala is now on the Parish
Advisory Committee, and is helping Father Jim nurture the emerging leaders of the Hispanic parishioners who
will help bridge the gap between our two faith communities.
Best wishes to you and your families for a happy and healthy 2007.
Vivat Jesus!
Very respectfully,
Doug Schott,
Grand Knight, Council 11424
St Bridget Church, Dayton, TN
