KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 11424
JULY 2007 NEWSLETTER
Our next meeting will be held on July 15th after the 10am Mass.
The August meeting will be on August 19th.
PAST EVENTS
PARISH BREAKFAST:
Our Council hosted a fundraising breakfast for the parish after the 10 am Mass on June 10th. Council
Warden Ken Hitchcock organized the event, and his wife Gail baked some great biscuits! This
wonderful opportunity for parish fellowship raised over $200 for the Council. Special thanks to
everyone who donated foodstuffs and to Ken, Gail, and all the volunteers who worked hard to make
this a success.
ELECTION OF 2007/2008 COUNCIL OFFICERS:
Council officers for the upcoming fraternal year were elected at our monthly meeting on June 17th.
There was only one change from the previous year, as Brother Mario Mirra was elected as our new
Deputy Grand Knight. Congratulations to Mario and thanks to all who have offered their time and
talent to serve our Council and parish this new fraternal year.
FAMILY DAY AT THE LAKE:
Our Council hosted a St. Bridget parish Family Day at the Lake picnic on June 24th at the home of
Joe and Mary Steinhauer. Over sixty people enjoyed a relaxing afternoon with good food (and the
occasional adult beverage…), great conversation, and boat rides on Watts Bar Lake.
FAMILIES OF THE MONTH AND YEAR:
The family of Ken and Gail Hitchcock was honored as the Family of the Month for June. Gail has been
a welcome addition to the St. Bridget parish choir, and Ken is the Council Warden. Both Ken and Gail
worked very hard to ensure the success of our recent fundraising breakfast.
The family of Bernie and Rose Switter has been named the Council’s Family of the Year for 2007.
Bernie worked countless hours on the renovation of the St. Bridget Church offices, classrooms, and
meeting areas. Rose is very involved in a variety of parish CCW activities. They lead the saying of
the rosary before Mass each week, and are involved in many community service projects.
Congratulations and thanks to both families for all they do for our parish and community!
UPCOMING EVENTS
INSTALLATION OF COUNCIL OFFICERS:
The installation of Council officers for the new fraternal year will be held after Mass on July 8th.
Families are welcome to observe this beautiful ceremony.
SUPREME CONVENTION IN NASHVILLE:
The International Knights of Columbus Supreme Convention will be held in Nashville, August 3-9. The
state KofC organization needs to get a list of people willing to help out as soon as possible. Please
visit the Tennessee State Council website for details about how you can participate.
GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT
14 Brother Knights attended the Council 11424 monthly meeting on June 17th.
Thank you to all of our Brother Knights who have accepted elected positions in our Council for the
new fraternal year. Thanks also to our past Deputy Grand Knight, Don Harrison.
As this new fraternal year begins, I would like to acknowledge the faithful service of two members of
the clergy who have been called to new assignments. Our former Diocese of Knoxville Bishop Kurtz
has been promoted to Archbishop and has moved on to his new responsibilities in Lexington,
Kentucky. He has been an inspirational leader and will be greatly missed.
We have also had a “change of command” at St. Bridget’s Church in Dayton. Our pastor (and our
Council’s Chaplain) Father Jim Vick has been reassigned to a larger church in Athens (This is starting
to get old > We get a new pastor trained and he moves on to a bigger church after just a couple
years!). Father Jim has been a terrific pastor and friend of our Knights of Columbus council. He has
an amazing work ethic and a dynamic leadership style which has been a blessing to all of us at St.
Bridget’s. God speed, Father Jim!
We have also been blessed with the arrival of Father Sam Sturm as our new pastor. I had the good
fortune to know Father Sam when he was just out of seminary and an associate pastor at All Saints
Church in Knoxville. Father Sam is another dynamic leader whose singing voice is an extra bonus!
Welcome, Father Sam!
Vivat Jesus!
Very respectfully,
Doug Schott,
Grand Knight, Council 11424
St Bridget Church, Dayton, TN
