KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 11424
AUGUST 2007 NEWSLETTER
Our next meeting will be held on August 19th after the 10am Mass.
The September meeting will be on September 16th.
PAST EVENTS
INSTALLATION OF COUNCIL OFFICERS:
The installation of Council officers for the new fraternal year was held on July 8th at St.
Bridget Church in Dayton. Our new Pastor, Father Sam Sturm, and District 13 Deputy Bill
Markiewicz officiated at the ceremony.
STATE “KICK-OFF” MEETING:
Council Grand Knight Doug Schott represented our Council at the East Tennessee region
fraternal year “Kick-Off” meeting in Lenore City on July 14th. This was an opportunity to get
the latest info on upcoming events and a variety of worthy programs such as the MR
“Tootsie Roll” drive. State Deputy Bill Wicke chaired the meeting which included
presentations by numerous Tennessee State Council officials.
DISTRICTS 12 and 13 PROGRAMS PLANNING MEETING:
Council Grand Knight Doug Schott also represented our Council at the combined Districts
12 and 13 semi-annual programs planning meeting in Chattanooga on July 18th.
Upcoming local 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Degree exemplifications and other special events were
scheduled for the upcoming year. District 13 Deputy Bill Markiewicz and District 12 Deputy
Wes Bell hosted the meeting which was also attended by State Advocate Mike Wills and
State Programs Director Jim Bruun.
1ST DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATION:
Council members Mauri Schmoll, Joe Fitzsimmons, and Doug Schott accompanied Brother
Knight Frank Kartz who went through his 1st Degree exemplification on July 23rd at Council
4572 in Cleveland. Special thanks to members of the Council 4572 1st Degree team who
conducted the ceremonial and made us feel welcome at their dinner social after the
Degree. Great food!
COUNCIL SEMI-ANNUAL AUDIT AND PROGRAMS MEETING:
Council Trustees Dave Patterson, Jerry Waterbury, and Herman Osborne conducted the
semi-annual audit of our Council’s financial records on July 26th. Council Treasurer Jerry
Corvin and Council Financial Secretary Frank Szot continue to keep our records in great
shape (There is no truth to the rumor I just started that Frank’s recent trip to Alaska was paid
for with Council funds!). Council Brother Knights Joe Fitzsimmons and Doug Schott then
conducted a quality control check of the pizza and adult beverages served as everyone
helped develop the Council programs schedule for the new fraternal year.
GRAND KNIGHT AND FINANCIAL SECRETARY TRAINING:
Grand Knights and Financial Secretaries in Districts 12 and 13 received training for their
respective positions at a special training session on August 1st in Chattanooga. Brother
Knights Jerry Corvin and Doug Schott represented our Council at the event which was
conducted by Tennessee State Secretary Mike Porter.
FAMILY OF THE MONTH:
The family of Council Advocate Joe Steinhauer and his wife Mary has been named Family of
the Month for July. The Steinhauers were gracious hosts for the Council monthly
meeting/social in May as well as the parish Family Day at the Lake picnic in June at which
over 60 people shared a beautiful day of food, fun, and fellowship. We all look up to Joe!
UPCOMING EVENTS
SUPREME CONVENTION IN NASHVILLE:
The International Knights of Columbus Supreme Convention will be held in Nashville,
August 3-9. Our Council will be represented by Grand Knight Doug Schott and his wife
Dottie who will be working as volunteers at the 125th Convention. It should be noted that
the Convention is being held in Tennessee (a state whose population is only 3 percent
Catholic) because of the tireless efforts of our Past Grand Knight Chase Wilson. Immediate
Past State Deputy Marty O’Haver credits Chase with getting the ball rolling before his
untimely death in 2002.
STAY TUNED IN SEPTEMBER:
Our MR “Tootsie Roll” Drive fundraiser and our fall Family Picnic/Bonfire/Fireworks
extravaganza at the Patterson’s will be in September at dates still to be determined at press
time.
GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT
14 Brother Knights attended the Council 11424 monthly meeting on July 15th.
Be sure to congratulate our newest 1st Degree member, Brother Knight Frank Kartz!
As you can see by the flurry of activity described above, our new fraternal year is off to a fast
start. It is great to see so many of our Council members involved already as we crank up for
another year of service to church, family, and community.
Vivat Jesus!
Very respectfully, (and… Go Vols!)
Doug Schott,
Grand Knight, Council 11424
St Bridget Church, Dayton, TN
