KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 11424
FEBRUARY 2008 NEWSLETTER
Our next meeting will be held on February 17th after the 10am Mass.
The March meeting will be on March 16th.
PAST EVENTS
STATE MIDYEAR MEETING:
The Tennessee state 2007/2008 KofC midyear meeting was held in Nashville on January 12th. Grand
Knight Doug Schott represented our Council. The meeting focused on growing membership and
developing programs to serve our families, communities, churches, and youth. This event also provided
an opportunity to show our Council banner to other Tennessee councils, ten of which indicated an
interest in purchasing their own version.
DISTRICT MEETING:
The District 13 midyear meeting was held on January 16th in Chattanooga. Council Grand Knight Doug
Schott attended this meeting as well, which enabled area councils to coordinate upcoming events such
as 2nd and 3rd Degree exemplifications.
FATHER SAM BIRTHDAY BASH:
The St. Bridget’s Council of Catholic Women (CCW) and our Knights Council co-hosted a birthday
potluck dinner party for our pastor and Brother Knight Father Sam Sturm on January 19th. This was the
largest parish event in recent history > a tribute to the respect and affection Father Sam has earned in the
short time he has led St. Bridget’s. Our Council presented Father Sam with a special rosary
commemorating the 125th anniversary of the Knights of Columbus. In addition, Father Sam was given
an unusual musical instrument > a “juice harp” > which we hope he will demonstrate at a future social
function!
CLERGY APPRECIATION DINNER:
A Clergy Appreciation Dinner was held at St. Therese Church in Cleveland on February 1st. Several
Council 11424 members and their spouses represented St. Bridget parish at this event honoring area
clergy, including our own pastor Father Jim Vick and our two deacons, Tom Kiefer and Mick Spencer.
Council 4572 sponsored the event which included a delicious dinner and an opportunity to speak with
Diocese of Knoxville administrator Father Al Humbrecht. Several staff officers of the Tennessee State
Council were also in attendance.
SUPER BOWL PARTY:
Our Council hosted a Super Bowl party at the St. Bridget parish hall on February 3rd. Over thirty people
braved a rainy night to enjoy the game, food, and camaraderie as the New York Giants upset the New
England Patriots in a game for the ages. Special thanks to Brother Knights Jeff Templin and Herman
Osborne who were able to get a great TV picture for us, and to Brothers Don Harrison and Joe
Fitzsimmons who managed our various “investment” opportunities…
UPCOMING EVENTS
SEMI-ANNUAL AUDIT:
Our Council semi-annual audit will be conducted February 7th. Rumor has it that pizza and an adult
beverage or two may be involved as our Council Trustees try to make sense of the books.
ST. VALENTINE’S DAY DINNER:
Our second annual Wife Appreciation Dinner will be held on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, at the
Heartland Grill in Dayton. The event gets underway at 7:30 and seating is limited, so please call or e-
mail Grand Knight Doug Schott if you plan to attend. This was a huge success last year.
SECOND DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATIONS:
A Second Degree exemplification will be hosted by Council 4572 in Cleveland on February 24th at 2:
30pm. As always, Council members are encouraged to accompany our Brothers as they continue on
their path to full knighthood in the Order. We will be leaving the St. Bridget parking lot at 1:30 to drive over
for the Degree. Please join us in support of our Brothers.
2nd DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATIONS:
Two 2nd Degree exemplifications are scheduled in the next couple months: September 12th and
October 14th. We hope to get all of our 1st degree Brothers to these exemplifications.
GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT
164 Brother Knights attended the Council 11424 monthly meeting on January 20thJuly 5.
Thanks to everyone who helped set up and clean up for our Super Bowl party on February 3rd. What a
game! Now if I can just figure out how to win that scoreboard game thingy that Brother Don Harrison
runs…
It is a pleasure to announce that Brother Knight Cliff St. Pierre, who moved to the Dayton area in the
aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, has decided to transfer his membership to our Council. Cliff has a great
singing voice which has greatly benefited our parish choir as they “make a joyful noise unto the Lord”
each Sunday. Welcome, Cliff!
Finally, Lent is about to begin what should be a period of personal introspection that culminates in the joy
of Easter. For some of us, our Catholic faith was “painted on us” by our parents and early religious
education teachers. In that regard, we can learn from our RCIA candidates and prior “converts” who
have studied our beliefs and now “own” their faith. During this Lent, I hope everyone makes time in their
busy schedule to reflect on their personal relationship with the Lord.
Vivat Jesus!
Very respectfully,
Doug Schott,
Grand Knight, Council 11424
St Bridget Church, Dayton, TN
