KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 11424
MAY 2008 NEWSLETTER
Our next meeting will be held on May 18th after the 10am Mass.
The June meeting will be on June 15th.
PAST EVENTS
FIRST DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATION:
Our Council had three candidates for the First Degree exemplification held on April 13th at
Council 6099 in Chattanooga. Several Council members observed as our newest members (Colin
Patterson, Chris Hill, and Chip Garland) began their journey to full knighthood in the Order.
Special thanks to our sister council for hosting the degree, and welcome to our newest Brothers!
STATE CONVENTION:
Council Treasurer Jerry Corvin and Grand Knight Doug Schott represented the Council at the
105th Tennessee State Convention in Nashville (Franklin) April 25-27. Brother Corvin was an
alternate delegate who filled in for Council Financial Secretary Frank Szot who was unable to
attend due to illness. (See Grand Knight’s Report below.)
WHEELCHAIR DONATIONS:
Two Brother Knights (Chip Garland and Tony Gervolino) have graciously offered to match the
Council’s gift of $100 toward the purchase of wheelchairs through a new KofC-sponsored
program. The wheelchairs cost $150, so we will be helping to procure two of them. Thanks Tony
and Chip!
UPCOMING EVENTS
BREAKFAST FUNDRAISER:
Our Council will host a breakfast fundraiser for the St. Bridget parish after Mass on May 4th.
Please contact event coordinator Ken Hitchcock to volunteer to help set up, cook, or clean up
after the event. Food donations are always welcome and appreciated.
2008/2009 FRATERNAL YEAR COUNCIL OFFICER ELECTIONS:
Elections for Council leadership positions are scheduled for our May 18th meeting. Please give
prayerful consideration to offering your services in some capacity. Everyone has a talent which
can be used in some way to benefit our parish community. What is your “gift” ?
OPEN HOUSE AT THE MAENTZ PLANTATION:
Newly minted 1st Degree Brother Knight Scott Maentz and his lovely bride Christine will host an
“open house” at their home near Spring City on May 24th. They have a variety of baby critters
(including goats) for the kids (people version) to see and enjoy. So bring your family out and
enjoy some time out on the farm.
FRATERNAL FINANCIAL PLANNING DINNER:
Our Council will host a parish financial planning seminar and spaghetti dinner (our confirmation
class will help put on the dinner as a fundraiser) at St. Bridget’s on June 7th after the Vigil Mass.
Our local KofC insurance field agent, Dan Schachle, will lead discussions on retirement income
and savings planning, long term health care, estate planning, and other insurance products. We
are also trying to get an attorney and an income tax planning expert to attend as well. More
information will be forthcoming as it becomes available.
SECOND DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATION:
Our Council is tentatively scheduled to host a 2nd Degree at St. Bridget’s after the Vigil Mass on
June 11th. We hope to have five Council members go through the degree along with other
Brothers from neighboring councils. Please plan to attend to honor our Brothers and demonstrate
the UNITY which this degree exemplifies.
GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT
20 Brother Knights attended the Council 11424 monthly meeting on April 20th.
Brother Jerry Corvin and I were honored to bring home several awards earned by the Council
during this fraternal year from the State convention, including the prestigious State Chaplain’s
Award which recognizes our Council’s substantial support of church, clergy, and parish activities.
Congratulations to all of our Council members whose hard work also benefitted our community,
youth, and pro-life programs. It is very true that we don’t do what we do for awards, but they are a
visible sign of our Council’s successful commitment to the principals of the Order.
I regret that Brother Frank Szot, our Council’s Financial Secretary, has had some health problems
recently. Please keep him and his wife Barbara in your prayers.
Finally, be sure to remember Mother’s day! > If Mama ain’t happy, nobody’s happy!
Vivat Jesus!
Very respectfully,
Doug Schott,
Grand Knight, Council 11424
St. Bridget Church, Dayton, TN
