KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 11424
JUNE 2008 NEWSLETTER
Our next meeting will be held on June 15th after the 10am Mass.
The July meeting will be on July 20th.
PAST EVENTS
BREAKFAST FUNDRAISER:
Our Council hosted a breakfast fundraiser for the St. Bridget parish on May 4th which brought in
over $300 > the largest amount ever. Special thanks to event coordinator Ken Hitchcock and all the
volunteers who helped prepare, cook, and clean-up after the event. The money raised will go to
worthy causes such as the one below.
WHEELCHAIR DONATIONS UPDATE:
Two Brother Knights (Chip Garland and Tony Gervolino) each matched the Council’s gift of $200
toward the purchase of wheelchairs through a new KofC-sponsored program. The wheelchairs cost
$150, so we will be helping to procure four of them > double our initial goal!
COUNCIL OFFICER ELECTIONS:
Elections for Council leadership positions for the upcoming 2008/2009 fraternal year were held at
our May 18th monthly meeting. Please congratulate our new Deputy Grand Knight Bob Patterson
when you get a chance. Thanks to all those who volunteered to lead the Council in the new year.
COUNCIL FAMILY OF THE YEAR:
The family of Council Youth Director Jeff Templin, wife Kim, and daughters Taylor and Teri was
honored as our Council’s Family of the Year for 2007/2008 after Mass on May 25th. Both girls are
altar servers, Kim leads the church choir, and Jeff mentors our youth group and serves on several
parish committees. He’s also a pretty good carpenter who volunteered to install a wheelchair ramp
for one of our parishioners with some health issues. Congrats Templin Family!
UPCOMING EVENTS
FRATERNAL FINANCIAL PLANNING DINNER:
Our Council will host a parish financial planning seminar and spaghetti dinner at St. Bridget’s on
June 7th after the Vigil Mass. Tony Gervolino has graciously volunteered to prepare our meal for
which a $5 per person donation will be accepted on behalf of our confirmation class. I’m sure Tony
would appreciate some help > please offer your services.
Our local KofC insurance field agent, Dan Schachle, will lead discussions on retirement income and
savings planning, estate planning, long term health care, and other insurance products. An
attorney and an income tax planning expert will also be available to answer any questions we might
have. Please call or e-mail Grand Knight Doug Schott as soon as possible to confirm your
attendance.
SECOND DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATION:
Our Council is still tentatively scheduled to host a 2nd Degree at St. Bridget’s after the Vigil Mass on
June 11th. We hope to have five Council members go through the degree along with other Brothers
from neighboring councils. Please plan to attend to honor our Brothers and demonstrate the UNITY
which this degree exemplifies.
FAMILY DAY ON THE LAKE PICNIC:
Past Grand Knight Jim Connors will host our 3rd annual “Family Day on the Lake” event at his home
on Watts Bar Lake near Spring City on June 29th. This will be a potluck picnic for our Council
families and prospective members (Invite someone you think might be interested in joining our
motley crew!), with the opportunity to swim, fish, or just enjoy a boat ride. Jim will provide the hot
dogs (a Navy guy who can grill! Who knew?), and the rest of us can bring our favorite food and
beverage items. Don’t miss this fun event.
INSTALLATION OF NEW OFFICERS:
Our new Council officers for 2008/2009 will be formerly installed following Mass on June 22nd.
Everyone is welcome to observe this beautiful Knights ceremony which will be led by our District
Deputy Bill Markiewicz under the watchful eyes of Council Chaplain Fr. Sam Sturm.
GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT
13 Brother Knights attended the Council 11424 monthly meeting on May 18th.
As you can see in the “Upcoming Events” section above, we are ending the current fraternal year
with a flurry of activities in June. I know people are really on the go in the summer, but I hope you
can be a part of these informative, inspirational, and just plain fun events.
Our Council continues to grow because guys are drawn to an organization with a worthy purpose.
Invite a friend to join us this summer as we continue to have fun while serving our church, families,
and communities. Everybody loves a picnic at the lake… share the experience.
Vivat Jesus!
Very respectfully,
Doug Schott,
Grand Knight, Council 11424
St. Bridget Church, Dayton, TN
