KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 11424
NOVEMBER 2008 NEWSLETTER

Our next meeting will be held on November 16th after the 10am Mass.
The December meeting will be on December 21st.

PAST EVENTS

ANNUAL MR DRIVE:

Our Council’s annual “Tootsie Roll” fundraising drive was conducted on September 26th and 27th at
the Wal-Mart and ShopRite stores in Dayton.  Drive Coordinator Don Harrison and his crew of
volunteers brought in a Council-record $2,223.27!  An additional corporate gift from Wal-Mart of $425
allowed our Council to send $2,650 to the MR Foundation of Tennessee > they fund agencies (such
as our own Rhea of Sunshine) which assist people with intellectual disabilities.  Thanks, Don, for
leading this year’s effort, and to the many volunteers who worked so hard to help those who cannot
help themselves.

FALL FAMILY PICNIC EXTRAVAGANZA:

Our big, fall family funfest at the Patterson’s was held on October 4th.  Over 50 knights, family
members, and friends enjoyed a potluck picnic, clay pigeon shoot, and a wonderful bon fire.  The
weather was awesome, and this year’s fireworks show was the best ever (I’m sure the grass fire is out
by now…).
We were indeed blessed to enjoy the hospitality of the entire Patterson clan who provides such a
great venue for this event each year.  Thank you, Patterson family!

CORPORATE COMMUNION:

Our Council celebrated Columbus Day with a Corporate Communion on October 12th at the 10am
Mass at St. Bridget’s.   22 brother knights participated as we displayed the UNITY of our Council, and
performed all the lay functions (greeters, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, ushers, etc.) at Mass.  In
addition, Council Chaplain and St. Bridget pastor Fr. Sam Sturm (assisted by our brother knight
Deacon Tom Kiefer) was the celebrant for this special occasion.

COLUMBUS DAY PICNIC:

Tennessee General Agent Dan Schachle hosted the second annual Columbus Day Picnic at Camp
Columbus in Hixson on October 12th.  Several brother knights and family members from our Council
attended and enjoyed great BBQ and a delightful fall afternoon.  Special thanks to brother Don
Harrison and his lovely wife Pat who provided not one, but two, versions of their delicious home-made
cole slaw.

FIRST AND SECOND DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATIONS:

Brother Knights Clinton Morgan and Gary Morgan (not related as far as we know…) went through
their 1st Degree on October 13th at St. Jude’s in Chattanooga.  Just six days later they went through
their 2nd Degree on October 19th at Holy Spirit in Soddy-Daisy.  At the rate they are going they will
be 4th Degree Knights by the time this newsletter is published!  Congrats Clinton and Gary!

MEMBERSHIP BLITZ:

Our Council conducted its fall membership “blitz” on October 26.  Council Membership Director Frank
Kartz and several other Council brothers helped man our information table outside of church and
answer questions from men who wanted to know more about the Order.  Please pray that our Council
will continue to grow and be able to serve our church and parish community.
FAMILY OF THE MONTH:

The family of Patrick and Tina Mugridge of St. Bridget Church was named as our Council’s Family of
the Month for September in recognition of their many contributions to the parish music and youth
programs.  Tina plays the organ at Mass and coordinates the parish Vacation Bible School program.
Patrick sings in the choir and leads the parish instrumental ensemble during special occasions, and
will probably join the Order (we hope!) when the time is right.  Congrats Mugridge family!

UPCOMING EVENTS

CHURCH CLEAN-UP DAY:

A church exterior clean-up day is tentatively scheduled for November 15th.  Council Deputy Grand
Knight Bob Patterson will be coordinating this event which enables parish youth to contribute a few
hours of labor spiffing up the church grounds.

PARISH CHRISTMAS PARTY:

Our Council is sponsoring a St. Bridget Christmas party open to the parish and friends on December
6th after Saturday night Mass.  The party will start with a pot luck dinner, and there will be drinks
available for a small contribution or you can bring your own.  During dinner we’ll sing Christmas carols
led by Fr. Sam who will provide a few new renditions to our favorite classics.  After the carols, we’ll
have a DJ and dancing.  We’ll also have a “silent auction” (25% of the proceeds will go directly to our
church), so bring any “white elephants” you’d like to contribute (or get rid of…) and bid on a few
Christmas presents yourself.  Be sure to plan now to get in the Christmas spirit early and join us for
an evening of fun and fellowship in the parish hall on December 6th.  Oh, and be careful about that
“He knows if you’ve been naughty or nice” thing…

BREAKFAST FUNDRAISER:

Our next scheduled breakfast fundraiser is on January 11th…  However, we may try to do one in
December.  Stay tuned for a firm date when we nail the timing down.

GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT

17 Brother Knights attended the Council 11424 monthly meeting on October 19th.  Council Deputy
Grand Knight Bob Patterson filled in for me while I was out of town visiting family.

I am pleased to announce that our newly minted Third Degree brother Chip Garland has graciously
agreed to assume the responsibilities of Council Recorder and Council Programs Director.  Thanks,
Chip, for offering your services to the Council.  Of course, I may owe him a kidney someday…

Reminder:   We will be sending out a notice regarding 2009 membership dues ($40) soon.  You can
get the “early bird” rate of $35 if you pay your dues between now and the end of the Super Bowl party
on Feb. 1st.

Vivat Jesus!

Very respectfully,

Doug Schott,
Grand Knight, Council 11424
St. Bridget Church, Dayton
